The Unique Mappers Network (UMT) successfully hosted a one-day mapathon session at the University of Abuja on the 14th of May 2026, bringing together students and geospatial enthusiasts for an engaging day of practical learning, collaboration, and open mapping.

The event was organised as part of UMT’s commitment to strengthening geospatial capacity development and expanding access to OpenStreetMap and GIS knowledge across Nigerian universities. Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of digital mapping, open geospatial data, and practical GIS applications relevant to sustainable development, urban planning, and community resilience.

A major highlight of the training was the hands-on introduction to basic QGIS, where participants learned core GIS concepts, including:

  • Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Understanding spatial data and map layers
  • Basic map visualisation and styling
  • Data loading and management in QGIS
  • Simple spatial analysis and map production
  • Map layout and map embellishment techniques

Participants also received practical exposure to OpenStreetMap (OSM) editing and collaborative mapping techniques, reinforcing the importance of open data in solving real-world challenges.

The interactive nature of the session fostered knowledge sharing, networking, and skill development among participants. Students actively engaged in the practical sessions, using their laptops and mobile internet to contribute to mapping exercises and learn how geospatial tools can support research, planning, and decision-making.

Speaking at the event, representatives of the Unique Mappers Network emphasised the importance of equipping young people with practical geospatial skills and creating opportunities for students to participate in global open-mapping initiatives.

The one-day mapathon further strengthened the growing relationship between the Unique Mappers Network and the University of Abuja, while opening pathways for future collaborations, trainings, and community-driven geospatial projects.

UMT extends its appreciation to the University of Abuja Department of Survey and Geoinformatics, as well as to the participating students, facilitators, and volunteers who contributed to the program’s success.

As the network continues to expand its impact, more training programs, mapathons, and collaborative geospatial initiatives are expected across institutions and communities in Nigeria.
